Mrs. Mike, the Story of Katherine Mary Flannigan,

A Fascinating look at history
I first read this book in high school and loved it! I own it and re-read it every once in a while. Mrs. Mike is a fascinating look at life in Canada so many years ago. I always like to know "what happened next" and I am wondering what happened. The last I read was that Katherine was a widow. What happened to Sergeant Mike? Did Katherine move back to Canada? Did their adopted children live until adulthood? Did Katherine have grandchildren? How long did she live?

A Classic that should be make into a Movie!
I first read this book in the 60's in high school and it has become an all time favorite for my five daughters and myself. We consider Mrs. Mike a classic which has bonded us together as adults and has become a part of our family tradition. We enjoy telling others about this book and are delighted to see that it is still being read and reread. I am currently searching for copies so all 6 of us have our own copy.

An people today think they've got a hard life.
Another required reading book from junior high . . . it was wonderful. My mother and my grandmother both read and loved it.

The life she led makes you count your blessings. Such heartbreak and such love.

A different view the second, and third time around
Nearly 40 years ago, as a 15 year old girl, I took this book from my parent's bookcase on a cold, Sunday in March. I held out little hope because it was my mother's book, but I was bored and had run out of library books. From the opening page I was enthralled. I read all afternoon and into the evening. The love story of Kathy and Mike appealed to my young, romantic heart. But as I moved into the middle of the book, I missed the romance and found it less exciting. Their married life was not as romantic as their courtship. I read it again twenty years later and saw a different book, one about a maturing marriage and the problems it faced. It seemed much more relevant as a 35 year old mother. I read it again a couple years ago and saw even more in the story; it became a much richer novel each time I read it.

This book was a wise purchase by my mother in 1947 for it has continued to live, and grow. As a girl it was a love story, 40 years later it is the portrait of a marriage. I found a copy in a used book, just like my mother's. I will read it again.

So glad I visited these old friends again!
I literally can't remember when I read this book for the first time. What I do recall is how much I enjoyed it, although I certainly was too young to understand the romance between Katherine Mary O'Fallon of Boston and Sgt. Mike Flannigan of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. To me it was simply a grand adventure set in the Far North, with (always a plus!) a young woman protagonist.

I finished re-reading "Mrs. Mike" last night, and I know exactly why it's considered a classic. Everything I loved about it in my girlhood is still there, with the grand adventure even more powerful to my more realistic adult imagination - but now the rest of the story is accessible to me as well. And I can only say: Magnificent! Because this is that rare and wonderful thing, a love story about women and men as they really are. The stark realism of life as Kathy and Mike face it, in a land that's isolated, dangerous, and at times nightmarishly brutal, makes the happiness they find together shine all the more brightly. It also gives new meaning to the phrase "dearly bought." The same applies to the friendships Kathy finds with other women, each of whom is a memorable character in her own right.

I am so glad I visited these old friends again!

Reminding us of cherished values of another era ...
Mrs. Mike is a surprisingly contemporary story whose main character is a strong female. I think it was written about 40 years ago, so parts of it are a bit dated (and perhaps politically incorrect by today's standards). However, it is a wonderful, tender love story set against the background of the extreme and brutal climate and geography of the Canadian northwest. It is the story of a young Irish girl from Boston who falls in love with a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman. The young husband, a strong male character, adores his wife and treats her accordingly. The book also depicts Indians (now called First Nation people in Candada) in a wonderful fashion, as well as strong and deep friendships among the women. This book should be required reading for young people, especially in a time when bonds between people are easily shattered and hardship is looked on as something to be avoided at all cost. Our book group loved it and read it based upon the memory of one of our members who read it as a very young woman and always treasured it in her heart.

Smart Women Finish Rich: Canadian Edition: 9 Steps to Creating a Rich Future: Canadian Edition

This is a must read!
I also picked this book up by accident at a local book store. I saw the title and thought that maybe this book would help me get my financial life in order. I am 20 years old and thought that the best time to start was now. I was hesitant to invest and save for retirement, but after reading this book, I'm glad that I have started putting money away. Mr. Bach explains terms in a way that are easy to understand. I was intimidated by words and phrases like '401(k)' and 'money market accounts'. After reading this book, I feel like I have a much better understanding of these concepts and can put my new found knowledge to good use in securing my financial future. This is a must read for anyone who is looking to better understand the investment world and start saving smartly. It is a great book for women, but it can also be shared with your male relatives and acquaintances. It is just an all around great book!

What a difference a good book can make!
Yes, I am one of those educated, smart women that has not done much with my money, other than spend it on things I don't need! You must be thinking, "she must not be that smart afterall!" Well, I just never had anyone teach me about money, and I never was really motivated to do anything about it. For those of you who think someone else is going to take care you...don't. You need to know about your money...married or single. Reading "Smart Women Finish Rich" has changed my financial life. It contains the information for literally anyone from any walk of life to get started. This book contains forms to determine where you are at right now with debt, cash outflow, etc., and then walks you through ways to save and invest that money, resulting in a secure future. It also clearly explains all the language, basic concepts, and types of funds, retirement accounts etc. After reading this book, you really will have a much better understanding of how to control your finances, and you will NOT be intimidated again. If you read any book this year, read this one. It really will make a difference in your life!

Well written financial planning primer for women and men.
I am a Certified Public Accountant with a background in financial planning. In February, I purchased the book for myself. The information wasn't new, but it spoke to me in volumes. For Valentine's day, I purchased the book for my assistant and secretary.

I have finished the book once, and have now been going through it a second time implementing each of the seven items.

During tax season, many of my clients ask for advice? What should we be looking to invest our money in? What does the Roth mean? How much insurance do we need? How do we plan for retirement? Should we be making gifts to our children's college fund? Many times I am not able to spend as much time, during the tax season as my client will need to absorb the information provided then begin working on the plan. This book allows my clients the time to understand the basics of financial planning. Know the time requirements on both them and myself to become effective. This is a wonderful starting point.

I often recommend books that I have read on financial planning, but this was the first time that I not only have recommended the book I went out and purchased over a dozen additional copies. I have given them out not just to Smart Women, but young couples, and those looking toward retirement. The information is sound. It's easy to understand. If the steps are followed they will make any client Finish Rich.

Teaching English Overseas - A Job Guide For Americans And Canadians

Perfect For Beginners
I think the book is really good for people who are just starting to look into teaching English to foreign students. The FAQs chapter and the one on the current overseas job market answered just about all of the questions that were running around in my head for the last few weeks. I feel that I now understand a lot about what TEFL is and what career prospects it offers. I'm also more aware of some of the problems and limitations. I'm trying to decide which TEFL certificate program to take and the book is helping me a lot with this. It lists the good and bad points of the different programs. Until I read it, I didn't know that there were so many programs and that some of them are much more popular than others with overseas schools. I haven't used any of the stuff on job searching yet but it all looks very clear and well organized. When I have my certificate and start looking for jobs all the addresses of employers should be really useful. I looked at a couple of other books but they didn't seem to be as detailed or as up to date. I don't think they even had email addresses for schools. This looks like the perfect book for someone like me. I'm going to lend it to my parents because they think I'm crazy to want to live abroad. I hope it will convince them that there are real job possibilities out there.

30 Years Too Late!
The book is brilliant, and my only regret is that it was not available thirty years ago when I entered the world of EFL! I have travelled and taught in many countries, and although I never actually met Jeff Mohamed I kept hearing his name. He is a legendary figure in English language teaching.

Written in a friendly and highly readable style, this book covers every single aspect of the overseas teaching experience. It shows you how to determine your suitability to be a teacher, how to select a training course, how to conduct the job search, and how to settle into a job teaching English overseas. And this guide is not afraid to tackle issues such as teaching illegally (without a work permit), health issues and those sensitive cross-cultural issues (including personal relationships). Increasingly Americans seem to be becoming wary, or even afraid, of working abroad. With its thoroughly grounded and practical approach to all the issues, this book dispels those fears. Jeff Mohamed's enthusiasm is highly contagious!

The listings of resources are current and incredibly comprehensive (I was pleased to see it included the school in Egypt, ILI Helopolis, where I spent many happy years!)

For those starting their careers as teachers this book is invaluable. For those more seasoned teachers, the lists of resources (almost 100 pages of them!) are invaluable. And I see from the introduction that if you do not like it, you can contact the publisher for a full refund. What have you got to lose?

This is a great book
I've been teaching English as a Second Language in the US for three years and recently decided to go overseas. I bought Mr. Mohamed's book and have found it to be exactly what I needed: clear, informative and detailed. It has already helped me to obtain job offers in the areas where I most want to work, Thailand and China. I'm sure that the book's detailed advice on training, job searching and adapting to life abroad would be as useful to someone just entering TESL as it has been to me.

And No Birds Sang

An Anti-War War Read
This book was a great surprise for me. I picked it up at a local library because I saw the name Mowat and thought, "Funny, Isn't he a Canadian naturalist? What's he doing in the History section?" What followed was a fascinating voyage of war, adventure, hilarity and, ultimately, tragedy and pain. Walking into the experience of WWII with a completely innocent demeanor, anxious to get into a fight, this brilliant writer has many funny and almost fatal false starts. When the fighting gets serious, the glib descriptions of his units treacherous challenges are positively riveting. I COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. If you like your war personal, exciting and honest, get this book to a comfortable chair and be prepared to not move for a night and a day. A brilliant book by a Canadian national treasure.

A Teen View
Thrilling book. I was "Forced" to read a book by Farley Mowat for my OAC Can. Lit. course, and I was quite impressed. In a world of pro-american war stories, books and movies, this is an excellent relief and view into the Canadian side of the war, on a front that we don't often read about or see in the media. The Italian front, and the battle for Rome.

A groupd of Canadian troops, a platoon of Intelligence personell led by Mowat's character, land in Italy, expecting harsh, bloody battles, to find a walk through, the only troops they encounter is a platoon of British Commandoes. The Long, hot walk to Sicily is met with no resistance, and no food, water and new clothes. As our hero watches birds from an APC, they ride into a mild German Ambush.

This book combines humour, when our hero and an associate ride on a motorbike through Italian antitank defences into an Italian base, to inspect "resistance", the Italians provide trucks and a limo for the tired Canadians, as well as horrific battle scenes, whole platoons lost under artillery. The visual words and imagery make this as much a movie as a book, a definate read for vets, baby boomers and rebelious teens alike.

A Canadian Classic
Undeniably the best war memoir written by a Canadian who served in the Second World War. The book chronicles Mowat's experiences in 1943 as a participant in the invasion of Sicily and Italy, and in classic Mowat style captures both the stark reality and lighter side of his experiences. Mowat also wrote a history of his unit--one of the first books he published, and which was later revised (and is somewhat difficult to find at the moment)--entitled The Regiment.

Royal Canadian Air Force Exercise Plans for Physical Fitness

Rediscovery 2000
I just found my battered copy of the 5BX and XBX Plans for Physical Fitness developed by the Royal Canadian Air Force in the 1960s or early 70s - with an introduction by Roger Duhamel, Queen's Printer. I am not likely to neglect these exercises again. I carried the original book containing precise exercise instructions with me wherever I went - and then no more. Now after dealing with years of sciatica only three days of these exercises seem to make a difference. Don't miss out on 'How to Begin' and 'How to Progress'. Gradual muscle build-up is the real secret here and redeveloping overall physical capacity. The first half of my book is devoted to ten tested exercises for 12 minutes a day for women; the second half consists of five tested exercises in 11 minutes for men. How about a reprint of this valuable small book? Perhaps with up-to-date comments by its original researchers and authors? RML

5BX - The best portable exercise plan ever
I used th 5BX system for over 20 years, at home and in my frequent out-of-town trips in my mining engineering practice. It contains a workout system for shut-ins (originally for Canadian pilots) comprising five basic exercises (5BX) (10BX for women). The exercises attempt to work all the muscle groups, and also your heart. The system has the following key attributes: 1) it works, keeping a minimal level of cardiovascular and muscular fitness 2) it takes only 15 minutes, guaranteed, which even the busiest of us can handle 3) you don't break a sweat, so there is little cool-down time or wet clothes when done 4) it requires no equipment 5) it can be done in a motel room with as little as 6 foot by 4 foot space 6) it is easy to remember (well reasonably) 7) it is graded, so you can progress steadily (with the accompanying sense of achievement) or drop back a level if you miss a few days or weeks. Unfortunately I lost my old copy when I divorced, and would like a new copy. I look forward to this great excercise book being re-published, and will buy a stack more if it is!

A terrific, simple exercise program for physical fitness
I started using this program 35 years ago when I was 21 and no longer had the time to work out with weights at the gym. The program involves several floor exercise routines followed by running (or bicycling or other aerobic exercise). Each routine has five steps of difficulty, which you reach at your own pace. The men's program includes more muscle-building exercises, the women's program stresses toning. No equipment is necessary. A very readable explanation is given of why exercise is important, diet, etc. What makes this program so special is its ease and flexibility. You can lengthen it, shorten it, miss a day, whatever. This book used to be sold in supermarkets at the check-out counter, and I have yet to see anything as good.

A Woman's Place: Canadian Edition
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (April, 1997)
Author: Barbara Delinsky
Average review score:

Not as good as "Three Wishes"
This novel is about the trials and tribulations of a woman who is being divorced by her ex-husband.

Central character Claire Raphael seems pretty passive and simply stands by while her husband takes custody of her kids and takes her to the cleaners because she has her own business and earns more money than the ex-husband.

There needed to be more conflict and drama. Maybe, Claire could have kidnapped the children or taken revenge on her ex, for the sake of plot suspense and momentum. Instead, poor Claire waits for the legal system to dole out what little she does end up with.

Also, Claire has to deal with her aging and dying mother, Connie. Why do characters in Barbara Delinsky books call their mothers by their first names always?

Coming off the surreal and mystical "Three Wishes" by Barbara Delinsky, "A Woman's Place" was a let-down, due to the central character's (In "Woman's Place") inability to take action, no matter what it was, regarding her sad situation.

The book just plods along while central character, Claire waits for her situation to change. This novel comes closest to repetitive Danielle Steel novels, since much of "A Woman's Place" is taken up by Claire doing nothing but endlessly and incessantly complaining about her lot in life instead of pro-actively doing something about it.

The Best One Yet!
Bravo for Barbara Delinsky. A Woman's Place captures the real-life trauma one woman faces when her world falls apart. This book is smart, thoughtfu, realistic and, for me, portrayed each character with balance and tolerance. I was struck particularly by the main character's strength and how she was able to negotiate and survive one of the most difficult experiences a woman can face. As a reader, I felt her horror and her confusion; this is the sign of a well-crafted and successful book. I heartily recommend A Woman's Place and look forward to Barbara's next book

Successful Business Woman's Worst Nightmare
I love this book because the writing is excellent but the story is one of the most compelling I've ever read. Delinsky made me care about the characters, to the point where I wanted to cry, laugh and scream at times. I can honestly say I hated being interupted when reading it and couldn't wait to get back into it. I think this is the best Delinsky book I've read thus far.

Anne of Green Gables (New Canadian Library)
Published in Paperback by McClelland & Stewart (J) (May, 1993)
Authors: M.A. Claus, W.A.J. Claus, Lucy Maud Montgomery, and Margaret Eleanor Atwood
Average review score:

great for girls
Anne of Green Gables is about a skinny red haired girl who has both a short temper and a very colorful imagination. She really loves the little farmhouse but the Cuthberts might send her back to the orphanage because Matthew needed a boy about 11 or 12 to help him on the farm.

Sometimes her imagination gets her in trouble. For instance when Marilla asks her to get a pattern from Mrs. Barry she doesn't want to because she imagined the woods between the houses were haunted! The book tells about her life growing up in the 1930's. As she grows, she learns many lessons and meets many friends who help her to become Anne of Green Gables.

This book is wonderful. It is a great book for girls to read. I loved it because the character was funny, spunky, and could talk forever. She reminded me of my sister. Anne never gave up trying to reach her goals. She will keep you interested throughout the whole book!

A memorable classic that touches your heart!
This is one of the best books ever written and the credit goes to spirited Anne (make sure it's spelled with an "e"!) Shirley. It's not often you find such a charming heroine as Anne. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is the first of a series on this lovable orphan, and it begins with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a respectable brother and sister, living at Green Gables. They are both growing old and need a boy to help out on the farm. But they got a talkative redhead girl instead. Before they can send her back to the orphanage, Anne has managed to win the hearts of Prince Edward Island with her wit and imagination. She seems to affect everyone around her - from busybody Mrs. Rachel Lynde to handsome Gilbert Blythe. And now, Green Gables will never be the same! . . .

It's not often you find such a spirited and lovable heroine as Anne. Captivating and captivatED, Anne is full of enthusiasm and fun, which gets her into all sorts of scrapes. This book is one that you are guaranteed to laugh over, cry over, and never want to put down! It is an ideal novel that you won't want to pass up! (Even if you don't read the rest of the Anne books, read this!)

Children's Literature at it's height
A few weeks ago, I got really sick of today's children's literature. I had read enough mysteries and trashy books about romance to last me a lifetime. So I wanted something else to read, something well-written with a good plot and lifelike characters. I had to look no further than the first book I picked up- Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery.

Anne of Green Gables is the first book in the Anne of Green Gables series. It takes place, as most of L. M. Montgomery's books do, on Prince Edward Island in Canada. This particular story takes place in the town of Avonlea. It follows young Anne Shirley, an orphan brought to Green Gables to help Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert on their farm. Much to Anne's dismay, Marilla tells her that they wanted a boy to help around the farm, not a girl. However, Marilla changes her mind and decides to keep the dynamic young girl who would become Anne of Green Gables.

This novel is incredibly written, with well-developed characters and an intricate plot. I absolutely loved it. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great example of children's literature at its height.

Dragonflight (Canadian Dummy #) - Dr Price Promotion Ized Run-On): #1
Published in Mass Market Paperback by (December, 1997)
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Average review score:

The beginning of a pretty good thing...
This is a typical coming-of-age SF/fantasy story, where the protaganist must overcome overwhelming odds to triumph over the forces of evil. It's main selling point is that it's a hybrid, giving us dragons and romance in an SF setting (altho the reader isn't necessarily aware that it's SF at first).

Lessa is the Cinderella of the story, working as hard in her hold as the lowliest peasant despite being the heir. The arrival of dragonriders to the hold upsets all of her long-range plans and she eventually ends up 'impressed' to a dragon queen. This opens the way for romance and more adventures as 'thread' (a burning, sometimes fatal thing that falls from the sky like rain) suddenly returns to bedevil the lives of people on Pern.

The story of Lessa is perfectly aimed at the Young Adult audience, with lots of adventure and many chances for the reader to try to figure out what 'thread' is and where the people of Pern are from. I first read it in my 20s and have reread it and the next 3 books in the series many times since (altho after that the series goes down the tubes).

I consider it on the same par as the Foundation series - light SF/fantasy entertainment. It's nowhere near as difficult to read as Tolkien or Cherryh but you don't get the same payoff either.

A wondeful book.
I first discoverd the world of Pern in sixth grade, having to go it the comuter lab and read excerpts(?) from the book Dragonsong. I loved Dragonsong when i read it in the computer lab, however I was extremely dissapointed until about 100 pages and I loved the book. I expecially fell in love with Dragonfilght, I couldn't put it down! It's been my favorite book since. Lessa is such a great character, the story of dragons and firelizards builds up and makes sense. i love F'lar and F'nor, and Jaxom. Ramoth and Lessa love eact other so muchis so beautiful. Its like it could really happen. Dragons being of only certain colors, how the where breed it amazing. I highley reccommed this book and the series(I finshed All the Weyrs of Pern a couple days ago). Anne McCaffery has a style of writing that makes you love the characters.

I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I must say that this book is one of my ABSOLUTE favorites! I have read it so many times that I almost know it all by heart! This book tells the story of Lessa, (my fav. character) who Impresses the last golden-queen dragon of Pern, Ramoth and how, basically, they defy all and, against all the odds against them, the save the world. This was the 1st Pern book I have ever read, and I say you should definetly read this one first. It makes understanding the different ranks and colors of the dragons easier...it makes you understand the real, emotional bond that the dragons and their riders have...how their minds are linked and how they understand everything about the other... This world is so believable that it makes me want to go to Pern and Impress a dragon! (lol) One of my favorite parts would have to be when Ramoth rose in flight to be caught by Mnementh, whose rider is F'lar, who was the only bronzerider who believed that the ancient menace of Thread would fall once again in the skies of Pern. And lo, was he ever correct! He and Lessa and Ramoth and Mnementh make the BEST couple, and their fierce wit and sense of knowing make the story fast-paced and wonderful! You get to really know all the characters like you are actually standing there, with them...its great! This is a TOTAL read for dragon fans and even sci/fi and fantasy fans! Its great for all ages, though I do warn against the 10 and under year olds-they might not get the concept. PLEASE READ! ITS SO WORTH A HARBACK VERSION! (I have all these books, so trust me!) :OD

Macroeconomics (Canadian Edition)
Published in Hardcover by Worth Publishing (March, 1998)
Authors: N. Gregory Mankiw and William Scarth
Average review score:

From an econ student's point of view
This book was a very easy read. The chapters were well written and the material was explained thoroughly using many graphs to demonstrate the concepts. Another part of this book that makes it good are the case studies that deal with the topic of the chapter at hand. If this is the economic textbook that your professor assigns you to read then don't worry because this book is straight forward and easy to understand.

Best textbook I have EVER read
I have read at least one hundred textbooks for my undergraduate and graduate courses and this book is the BEST text book I have ever read. In general, I never liked economics, but this book made me think, understand, and like economics. The true triumph of this book is its simplication. Instead of explaining the details of Macroeconomics (which most econ textbooks tries to do) the author brilliantly pulls the reader into thinking about economics in more detail than what the book presents. Makiew is not only a consummate economist, but he is a consummate writer as well.

BEST MACROECONOMICS TEXTBOOK AVAILABLE
Among all the textbooks I have seen in economics, I have found Mankiw's to be the best. It is clear and concise, addressing all the important intermediate issues in macroeconomics. The description of concepts is simple, and the book benefits from a three pronged approach to teaching - graphical, mathematical, and anecdotal. The student is free to choose whichever one he feels most comfortable learning from.
